George Carlin has always been one of my favorite comedians. I just saw his latest HBO special, It's Bad For Ya, and at 71 he's still sharp as a tack... that is, until today when he died of heart failure.

When he was young, he had a "cranky old man" character. Then he became the cranky old man character! The stuff he did was so smart that to me he wasn't really a comedian... he often crossed over into the realm of philosopher.

The problem with a surprise twist ending such as the one presented in this flick is that you can get trapped in the "Search For Spock" syndrome, whereby no sequel can be released without spoiling the end of this picture for those that haven't seen it.

But much like Iron Man, the strength of this picture is not the special effects - it's the lead actor.

August 15th, 2006: Samuel L. Jackson is on to promote his latest, Snakes on a Plane.
I have never seen an actor happier to be in a movie. That's what makes this clip great.

The film clip they're talking about at the beginning is of course the "I have had it with these motherf*cking snakes on this motherf*cking plane!" clip.

Clever script, very funny, socially conscious, John Cusack starred, produced and co-wrote so it's apparently something he feels strongly about. An unintended consequence: stepping out of the theater after the picture back onto the street, I noticed Hollywood Blvd suddenly seemed a lot more aggressive.

Season Five of Penn & Teller's fantastic Showtime show has been released on DVD, which made me happy... and then sad.

It's kinda sad that if you want really honest investigative reporting these days you have to go to Penn and Teller, a pair of self-professed professional con men. This isn't even their primary gig, they have a highly successful magic show in Las Vegas. They do this because they want to!

Fire Season has started here in Hollywood

A massive fire Sunday at Universal Studios destroyed the building housing the King Kong exhibit and damaged a video library vault, officials said. The fire is still burning at the video vault, Los Angeles Fire Chief Douglas Barry said. Firefighters have contained the blaze, but not extinguished it.

Whereas the first films pay tribute to the movie serials of the thirties, this one clearly was inspired by the pulp comics of the fifties... with all plot holes and leaps of logic intact. I thought it was swell.
